Building on our original MAFD* concept, the Drumming Friend Forever MAFD (DFF) is a MIDI and eurorack compatible control voltage device made to trigger custom synth sequences to accompany a live drum performance.

As a MAFD, it is uniquely suited for controlling the beloved Moog DFAM analog percussion synth, but it can also control other synths via MIDI and eurorack compatible clock and reset triggers.

The DFF is intended to sit between one or more MIDI controllers–e.g., drum pads or pad controllers–and one or more synths.

At the heart of the DFF is a polyrhythmic, user-programmable, monophonic sequencer. Using your preferred MIDI controller, tap the beat you want your synth to follow, and the DFF will drive a sequence at that tempo. Trigger a different sequence, and start, stop, or reset the sequencer at will. For maximal rhythmic expression, sequences are readily constructed to follow beat subdivisions 1 through 9. 

The companion web-based configuration tool provides access to add or modify user sequences and other settings. It can also be downloaded for offline use.

The DFF also features an “Original MAFD Plus” mode that provides quintessential MAFD features such as the ability to sequence the individual steps of a DFAM with MIDI. Also available are various modes of MIDI clock sync.

*MAFD = MIDI Adapter For DFAM. It is the scheme we developed for using MIDI to control a DFAM.

Specifications:

• The USB type B jack is for power and USB MIDI.
• Clock Out and Reset Out generate +5V triggers.
• To DFAM Adv/Clock generates MAFD-style +5V triggers for driving a DFAM’s sequencer.
• The two buttons allow for manually generating a trigger.
• The Beat LED pulses with the DFF’s current beat.
• The MIDI Note In LED flashes whenever a note is received on the designated incoming MIDI channel.
• CV1 Out and CV2 Out provide control voltages in the range of 0 to +5V.
• MIDI In and MIDI Out are standard MIDI DIN jacks.
