Here is an absolutely stunning concert sized 12-fret pre war Washburn Style 6 guitar from the nineteenth century...most likely from the mid 1880s, so I'm dating it at 1885. Lower bout measures 13 3/4". Upper bout measures 9 3/4". Depth at end block is 3 7/8". Depth at neck block is 3 1/2". 24 5/8" scale length. There are no identifying numbers or model designations. Only the Washburn logo is burned into the inside back center brace that can easily be seen through the soundhole. Completely original save for the bridge pins and new modern Martin case that fits her perfectly. She has had a pro neck set and bridge re-glue. The top (most likely Adirondack) is crack free. Gorgeous Brazilian back is crack free. There are two professionally repaired side cracks so well done I couldn't even see them. I only know this becasue the previous owner told me. Original tuners work perfectly. Bar frets show only slight wear under the unwound strings in the first position. Binding is tight and intact. 1 7/8" nut. Looks original to me, so it is probably ivory, but I can't say that for sure. The condition of the 139 year-old is beyond adequate description, really. I marvel at it every time I pull her out and play. Calling it museum quality is accurate, I believe, and not a stretch at all.
But to me, the real wonder of this guitar is the X-braced top that easily handles steel strings. She has been set up with light gauge strings for the past five years. There is no distortion behind the bridge. The bridge itself is flat and secure with no pulling whatsoever. The tone this guitar produces is as good as it gets. I have other pre war Martin concert sized guitars around here, and this one stays right with them. So, it's a great value, in my opinion, as we rarely (if ever) see guitars from this era in this condition that sound this good. This same model is pictured in Hubert Pleijsier's wonderful Washburn book on the first plate in pictures in the back. Unfortunately, this one lost her coffin case sometime in the past. She is now housed in a near mint modern Martin case that fits her perfectly.
Please write with questions or requests for additional photos. My card is embedded in the photos should you like to speak with me directly. Shipping/insurance to Alaska and Hawaii will be more and calculated exactly. International buyers welcome as the Brazilian on this guitar dates well before the date of restrictions. This guitar is for sale locally and on other platforms, so it could be taken down from here without notice.
