Up for sale is a 1958 Airline Model 3731 in remarkably clean condition and excellent working order. Originally sold through the Montgomery Ward catalog, this little combo amp is a wonderful piece of American musical history and a fantastic recording or home-use amplifier.

Freshly fitted with NOS tubes, this amp has come back to life and sounds wonderful. It delivers the warm, articulate clean tones you'd expect from a late-'50s single-ended 6V6 design, with a sweet natural overdrive that appears when the volume is pushed.

The attached video features this exact amplifier so you can hear its tone and response for yourself.

Features

  • Original 1958 Airline Model 3731
  • Approximately 10 watts
  • Single 6V6 power tube design
  • Original 6" speaker
  • Original power cord
  • NOS replacement tubes recently installed
  • Pots recently cleaned
  • Great sounding vintage tube amp

Condition

This amp is exceptionally clean for its age and presents very well cosmetically.

The only significant issue worth mentioning is that the input panel has a slight dent inward, likely from having a cable plugged in while the amp tipped backward at some point in its life. The damage is cosmetic and does not affect functionality.

Otherwise, the amp remains in very nice vintage condition.

Tone

Don't let the compact size fool you. This little Airline has plenty of personality.

At lower volumes it stays surprisingly clean, making it an excellent studio amp for recording vintage-flavored clean tones. As the volume is increased, the amp begins to deliver the warm compression and natural breakup that made these late-'50s circuits so desirable.

Its simple design, original speaker, and vintage circuitry create a character that modern amplifiers often struggle to replicate.

Why You'll Love It

Whether you're a collector of Montgomery Ward and Airline gear, a recording guitarist searching for unique vintage tones, or simply someone who appreciates classic American tube amplifiers, the Model 3731 offers tremendous charm and usability.

This is exactly the kind of amp that earns a permanent place in a studio because it does something different from the usual Fender, Gibson, and Supro offerings.
