Original ARP Odyssey Analog Synthesizer 1974 Black and Gold Mark I, Rare.

This is identical to the White Face Mark I except for the Black and Gold Paint version.

ARP had switched the paint scheme to black and gold when artists had trouble seeing the white face under bright stage lights.

Shortly after they created the Mark II with different circuits and CV gate inputs and outputs standard, these all had the black and gold paint but a wider power switch.  

All the circuitboards are version I, and it has the original 4023 filter which doesn't lose volume or bass response when resonance is increased.

The filter is on it's own sub module circuitboard and can be changed to another ARP filter by simply connecting s different sub module.  The 4035 and 4075 filters are available online for about $70 each.  

I bought the odyssey from the original owner 12 years ago, who had it in it's case for decades.  I restored it and it has been working fine ever since.  It is in excellent condition and comes with the original CV foot pedal and portamento foot-switch to only slew selected notes when pressed.  

I am also including the book 'Learning Music with Synthesizers' from 1974 by David Friend, Alan R. Pearlman, and Thomas D. Piggott.  This book uses the Mark I Odyssey for all examples and is s good guide to this synth and synthesis in general.

It has had all electrolytic capacitors replaced and certain tantalum capacitors on the power lines replaced with electrolytics.    

When tantalum capacitors fail they short circuit, and in odysseys this shorts the power rails which can cause serious damage.  

The 4023 filter submodule has had the epoxy and resin removed to access the circuit (hard work, well worth it).

This Odyssey has been modified to add features and make it easier to integrate to other gear.  All on 1/4" sockets.

First, CV, Gate, and Trigger Inputs and outputs have been added, necessary on all Mark I's as none came with CV Gate from the factory.

Sample and Hold Mixer output-

The sample and hold mixer has 2 level controls with switches to select the sources to be sampled by the S&H.

VCO 1 Sawtooth wave or Square wave on one, and Noise or VCO 2 on the second.

This can be used to have raw oscillator outputs to run through external filters, or to use as control voltage for modulating external CV inputs at audio rates.

All mods are buffered to protect the instrument.

Additionally, there are 4 toggle switches added.

ADSR Envelope Speed - 3 positions, original, x10, and x 100 speed, this allows faster times and fine tuning of faster envelope speeds useful for fast sequences and to quickly adjust all envelope times.

AR envelope speed - same as the ADSR mod above.

LFO Speed - 3 positions, original, x10, and x 100 speed.  This allows audio rate modulation from the LFO well into the audio range, it creates vocal and vowel sounds easily and takes the odyssey into vast new ranges of sound.  Combined with the VCO modulation available on the odyssey, you can have 2 audio rate modulation sources for the filter and VCO 2.

LFO Key Sync - 2 positions, on / off.  

The standard Odyssey restarts the LFO with each key press.  This switch allows the LFO to run free regardless of the keys pressed.

The Odyssey is duophonic, permitting two notes to be played simultaneously and really interesting when used with the Ring Modulator for experimental sounds.

The synth plays in tune and all functions work as designed.

The originals are something else, all the clones out there are nice but they sound like modern analog synths, not classics.  This has the first odyssey circuits ARP made, a whiteface in everything but paint job.  You feel it and hear it in the sound, it's alive.

En venta Original Antiguo ARP Odyssey Modelo I en Negro y Dorado, el Odyssey mas raro producido en los 70's.

Es electrónicamente idéntico al Odyssey blanco, la diferencia es solo en la pintura.

 La empresa ARP cambio la pintura blanca cuando artistas tenían dificultad en verlo bajo luces brillantes de escenarios grandes. 

En poco tiempo cambiaron los circuitos para hacer el modelo II, incluyendo entradas y salidas de CV y Gate.  Todos los modelo II tienen la pintura negra y dorada, y el interruptor de potencia se cambio a uno mas ancho.

Todas las placas de circuitos son version I, y tiene el filtro original 4023, que no pierde volumen ni bajo cuando subes la resonancia.  El filtro esta en una placa aparte que se enchufa a la placa principal, y se puede cambiar por otro filtro de ARP sencillamente.  Los filtros 4035 y 4075 se pueden comprar por internet.

Lo compre del dueño original hace 12 años, quien lo guardo en un estuche por décadas.  Lo restaure y le hice mejoras a mi gusto, detallado mas adelante.

Esta en excelente condición y viene con su pedal original y el pedal de portamento original, que activa el portamento solo cuando lo presionas.

Estoy incluyendo en la venta el Libro 'Learning Music with Synthesizers' del 1974 escrito por David Friend, Alan R. Pearlman, y Thomas D. Piggott.  El libro usa el Odyssey mk. I para todos los ejemplos y es un buen guia para el Odyssey y síntesis en general. 

Todos los capacitadores electrolíticos han sido cambiados y los de tantalum en las lineas de potencia también.  Estas ultimas cuando fallan causan corto circuito que pueden dañar los circuitos seriamente.

El modulo del filtro 4023 ARP los sellaba en resina y epoxy, este lo he abierto, es mucho trabajo paciente pero permite acceder al circuito del filtro para reparos.  

Tiene modificaciones importantes para integrarlo a otros equipos y para ampliar sus funciones.  Todos en entradas de 1/4".

Salida de la mezcladora de Sample & Hold

La mezcladora de S&H tiene dos graduadores de niveles, el primero puede tener la señal del Oscilador 1, onda serrucho o onda cuadrada.

El segundo puede tener la señal de bulla blanca o rosada, o la onda cuadrada de oscilador 2.

Esto se puede usar como salida de audio de los osciladores sin pasar por el filtro, para procesarlo con otros filtros etc. o se puede usar como señal para modulación a cualquier entrada de CV externos.

Adicionalmente hay modificaciones en 4 interruptores

Velocidad del ADSR -

3 posiciones, original, x10, y x100.  Esto permite tiempos mas rápidos y control fino sobre tiempos cortos, útil para secuencias rápidas o para cambiar la articulación sin  ajustar todos sus controles.

Velocidad del AR -

igual a la modificación del ADSR.

Velocidad del LFO -

3 posiciones, original, x10, y x100.  Esto extiende las frecuencias al rango de audio, lo que deja crear sonidos de vocales y extiende el rango de sonidos posibles. Combinado con la modulación de los osciladores en la mezcladora S&H, permite 3 fuentes de modulación en frecuencias de audio.

LFO reinicio - 2 posiciones, On / Off

El Odyssey siempre reinicia la oscilación del LFO cuando tocas una tecla.  Este interruptor deja que el LFO sigue oscilando sin reiniciar cuando tocas el teclado.

Es sintetizador duofónico, tocando dos teclas a la vez genera dos frecuencias, una de cada oscilador, permitiendo dos notas a la vez y muy interesante cuando se usa el Ring Modulator para sonidos experimentales.

El sintetizador afina establemente y todas las funciones funcionan bien.

Los originales son otra cosa.  Todos los nuevos 'ARPs' son lindos pero suenan a sintetizador moderno, no clásico.  Este tiene los primeros diseños de circuitos Odyssey, es una de cara blanca en todo menos la pintura.  Se siente y se oue en el sonido, vive.
