The 1934OM model came about when fans of our venerable 1934D Model began requesting the same build in a smaller, OM body. The highest quality, old-growth tone woods, combined with SCGC’s relaxed assembly, produce an unrivaled vintage tone from its first notes, and it only gets better with age. This over the top custom 1934 OMC with slotted headstock was the featured Santa Cruz guitar this April at the 2023 NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA. Built with Master grade old growth Brazilian Rosewood from the 1930s paired with centuries old Fort Ross Chapel Redwood reclaimed from the 19th century chapel at Fort Ross located on the California coast, this is a one-of-a-kind 1934 OMC. Features Adirondack pre-war style advanced scalloped X bracing with hot hide glue, Full Tortoise bound body, neck and headstock, Mahogany custom round neck profile with slotted headstock, Abalone Pearl torch inlay, Blue Paua Pearl rosette and much more. The Fort Ross Chapel Redwood top is a deviation from the standard Adirondack Spruce of the 1934 models but is one of exceptional tonal spectrum and antiquity perfect for the 1934 OMC.
The body is premium master grade Brazilian Rosewood with a silky figuring. Lots of color and ripples across the grain highlight this old growth wood. Considered the ‘holy grail’ of tone woods- highly sought after for centuries from the forests of Brazil. Heralded for it’s density to weight ratio, Brazilian Rosewood is the perfect tone wood for volume, warmth and clarity. Paired with the old growth Fort Ross Chapel Redwood, this is old wood at it’s best.
The old growth Redwood used on this guitar was reclaimed from the chapel at Fort Ross which was established in 1812 by fur trappers on the West Coast of what would become California, near what is now Bodega Bay in Sonoma County. The Chapel was built circa 1824, entirely of old growth Redwood planks with mortise and tenon joints. An accidental fire destroyed the chapel on October 5, 1970 and during the reconstruction that ensued, a few of these beams that were burned and removed were found to have vertical grain, perfectly suitable for instrument building. Fast forward 50 years and these precious few beams were acquired by Richard Hoover of Santa Cruz Guitars and and just recently have been milled to premium guitar tops. Richard’s assessment is the processed lumber is 200 years old and based upon the thickness of the beams, their width and length, tightness and shape of the annual rings that the original trees were quite massive and possibly thousands of years old.
Other features include Brazilian Rosewood headstock overlay, Ebony fretboard and bridge with traditional long saddle, Pearl square and diamond fretboard inlay with logo at the 12th & 13th frets, purfle combo multi-stripe top purfling, Gold 3-per side Waverly tuners with Snakewood buttons, Tortoise backstrip and custom tail wedge, 1 3/4″ nut width and custom 2 1/4″ saddle spacing and more. This is a master crafted build- a pinnacle of construction, tone, and art. Every detail of this guitar was specifically chosen to produce an old world, vintage sound in a pristine, new instrument. This isn’t ‘like the old stuff.’ It is the old stuff.
