Here we have a venerable Hammond Solovox Model J (this was the earliest of three models, dating 1940-1946)...a legendary early monophonic precursor to the synthesizer. This is an ingenious little unit: a small keyboard that would screw onto the frame underneath a piano keyboard. There are several buttons here to change sounds, and a knee lever underneath this attachment controls volume. In turn, this unit is attached by cables to a floor cabinet which contains the amplifier, oscillators, and speaker.
Included are instructions on how to tune the oscillators (It is not currently in tune...I played it recently and fell in love with it all over again, but it really does need some adjusting for intonation and tonal stability). A new grounded power cord was installed by a recent previous owner. Fun fact: I purchased this some years ago from an "anonymous seller" in Chicago...a pick-up was arranged, and it turns out this was part of Jeff Tweedy's instrument collection.
