This instrument, which was crafted in Ghana from recycled iron, also occurs in neighboring Benin and Togo among the Ewe and other groups.

The gankogui (pron. gahn-koh-khee) may be played with a bit of metal or with a length of wood or bamboo (either of the latter is included). Two tones can be produced, depending on whether the small cone ("the child") or the large cone ("the mother") is struck with the beater.
