ER-101/102 by Orthogonal Devices is a brilliant and flexible 4-channel CV/gate sequencer and controller/recording interface. described by the manufacturer as a "real-time composition, sequencing and automation environment", the ER-101/102 combo acts as an incredibly powerful control center for your Eurorack rig. the learning curve, though a bit steep, is not due to poor design; like the ER-301, these modules have a healthy eye towards ease of use demonstrated by their excellent interface.
ER-101 is the sequencing core, comprising four independent tracks, each with two CV outputs (A and B) and a gate output. CV levels are set in arbitrary steps (indexes), the value of which is determined by the selected voltage table for that track. ER-101 comes loaded with various tables defining everything from standard 12-TET tuning to a wide variety of microtonal tunings, just intonation and a wealth of user-definable tables. each index can be set to any voltage from 0.000V to 8.192V in increments of 2mV. two tables may be loaded at a time - one for the A outputs, one for the B outputs - and can be swapped or even edited on the fly.
each track is of fully arbitrary length and can contain up to 100 patterns of up to 100 steps each. each step can be from 0-99 clock cycles in duration with 0-99 gates or triggers (with or without racheting) spread arbitrarily across its length. arbitrary subsections of tracks may be looped independently and set on the fly with the LOOP Start and End buttons. shuffle (swing), ratchet (note repeat) and CV smoothing can be toggled on a per-step, per-pattern or per-track basis and smoothing is scaled in real-time to match the current tempo. in addition, each track can run independently at its own multiple or division of the input clock making a wide range of polyrhythms, polymeters and rhythmic dissonance accessible in ways not easily achievable with other sequencers. add to all this a robust math feature for quick and intuitive (but also destructive!) expansion, contraction, transposition and general mutation of your steps, patterns or tracks and you have a truly unique and powerful sequencing tool. once you've dialed everything in, store the state of all 4 tracks in one of 16 snapshots for later recall.
ER-102 expands on the core functionality of the ER-101 in various ways, adding an additional layer of control and complexity. ER-102 adds "parts" to the tracks which may be overlaid freely across step and pattern ranges. up to 99 parts may be defined per snapshot, making it possible to navigate through your tracks in non-linear, performative fashion. in addition, three step groups make it possible to apply math and other operations to arbitrary, user-defined selections of steps. these groups may be defined on the fly through manual step selection or very quickly with the usage of Euclidean masks. invert and rotate buttons expand mathematical operations and work well with groups, and real-time step record and overdub functions with manual or voltage-controlled punch-in and punch-out makes it simple to drastically alter your sequences in real-time while non-destructive pass-thru for rehearsal and recording makes it easy to experiment before doing anything you can't easily undo.
this ER-101/102 pair has lived in my studio for just over 3 years and i can say without hesitation this is my favorite sequencer in Eurorack. it's a blast to play with and even after many hours of use it's still a bit over my head. the math functions are incredible and step grouping enables elaborate manipulation of sequences in ways that are simply not possible with any other piece of gear i've encountered and even with a full-featured DAW it would be difficult to have this kind of control. i have hesitated to pull the trigger on listing these for months now as the O|D store has rarely been open the past few years and the 102 has not been manufactured since before i got into Eurorack, but i simply do not use these as much as i used to as they require a healthy time investment to use properly.
this ER-101/102 combo is in excellent condition with minor rash and a few pockmarks on the original silver aluminum Peoples' Choice panels and some rash/scuffing around the edges of the installed custom aluminum black and white panel. i tried to show the most noticeable aesthetic issues in the detail images. the modules function exactly as they should and are built like tanks, equipped with satisfying buttons and my favorite smooth-turn encoders of all time (possibly second to the luxuriously large high-resolution encoder on the ER-301). purchase includes ER-101/102 mounted behind a custom aluminum combo panel, two power ribbon cables and the original Peoples' Choice aluminum panels as well as the additional hardware needed to re-install them. please note that these are sold as-described with no returns accepted for any reason. ships free and fully insured within the USA - please contact me for an international shipping quote as items of this value may accrue additional fees.
