This is a soulful little gem! Beautiful USA made Mandolin from the 1920’s/30’s. Plays absolutely perfectly and sounds amazing with razor sharp intonation and lightning fast action. You can’t believe it’s pushing 100 years old, it’s an awesome instrument!

So I am going out on a bit of a limb by saying that this was made by Regal. I’ve shown it to some other friends of mine and they think it’s a solid wager that it is a Regal, but it very well may be another similar brand from the first half of the century. There were a lot of subsidiary brands going on around then, and the concept of branding in general was a very different landscape from what it is today. A lot of instruments from factories that regularly branded their instruments also made some with no markings on them whatsoever, it was a different time. I’ve seen some Regals from this time period that were spot on to this one, but if anyone else has any insight don’t hesitate to let me know. To me, everything on this one points to being the late 1920’s, right at the end before the depression. What really sets this one apart from the others that I’ve seen is the playing condition that it’s in, I’ve only seen a few ever that play as nicely as this one.

Most of the time instruments that are this old need serious work that is definitely cost-prohibitive. Usually the necks are bowed like crazy (with no truss rods), the tops are sunken in, there will be areas of the necks that are no-play zones. Most of the time a total mess. This one plays perfectly. The neck is straight as an arrow, every note sounds clear and beautiful with fantastic tone, and it sounds like a heavenly little bell. The top is spruce and the back and sides are mahogany, but it almost to me sounds like a Koa instrument with a bell-like mid range if you can picture that. Very beautiful and sweet sound! The playability and intonation are super pro, I would take this into a pro studio. It would sing beautifully under studio mics. The tuners are in fantastic shape, all the buttons are present and strong and each one tunes smoothly. Usually on these they’re all dried out and rotten, but these are chilling super hard!

There were some cracks on the back and top, but they’ve been repaired perfectly and went back together with barely a visible seam. You can kind of feel it with your fingernail if you’re searching for it, but it blends right in and is totally rock solid. The whole mandolin is active and resonant like a tuning fork, it’s awesome.
