Serial # 105597 1946
This 76 year old vintage Martin Tenor is an amazing addition to your collection. First, it is a Martin and continues to gain in value. Second, I have used it extensively on recordings (one with Ace Frehley for our acoustic version of the Stones "2000 Man"). I found that it added a timbre that I couldn't duplicate with a six string. It has a unique "dulcimer" sound when played with a thin pick. I also strung it with Elixir Acoustic Phosphor medium bronze (.013, .017, .026, .035) and played slide to receive a sound close to dobro.
The 20-fret neck meets the body at fret 14.
Measuring a scant 11-3/8" across, the size 5 isn't much larger than a baritone ukulele, but with its X braced top and exceptionally light build, the instrument offers up an amazing amount of tone.

Completely original and in very good condition but for a tiny 1.5" short repaired crack at the bottom of the front belly (pictured.) Dave Neely, Hollywood's premier luthier gave it a once-over and tightened that little crack up. Hey, this baby is 76 years old so It shows some play here and there. But I'll stand by my "very good" condition rating.  Original bar frets play cleanly, and the guitars' neck angle allows for an easy playing low set-up. There is hardly any strum-wear on the top, and the rest of the instrument's finish is in particularly good shape. The tuning pegs are starting to "melt," a phenomenon that has to do with the plastic they used during and after the War. I was told that since this is all they have "melted" we are in good shape that there is no more change after these 76 years. For more about  Kluson tuners (which have similar knobs) see my friend, Bob Cillo's great in-depth look at tuners here:

U-shaped neck carved with a nut width of 1-1/4", scale of 22.75" and a spread of 1-3/8" at the saddle. Solid mahogany unbound body, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, ebony nut, original ivory saddle.

With original Bull's Head chipboard case.

The typed sheet of Martin serial numbers was given to me by a Martin luthier when I visited their Bethlehem headquarters. He helped me establish the date of creation (1946).

I brought it to Antiques Roadshow at Newport, Rhode Island on September 17, 2017. I got a lot of time with the expert from the Boston area, Lawrence Cavalieri, who valued it at $3000-3500, providing I fix the bridge (a $200 job.) I also performed for their "Feedback Booth" with the Martin,(in the pouring rain with Hurricane Jose approaching.) Bridge has been expertly brought to "like new" condition by Hollywood's luthier par excellence, Dave Neely.
