This Epiphone Zephyr Deluxe Regent Model Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1951) was made in New York, NY, serial # 63656, sunburst lacquer finish, laminated maple body and neck, laminated maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.
This is a full 17.5" two-pickup, full depth archtop with quite fancy trim, including 5-ply body binding with a thick outer layer, a multi-bound vine inlaid headstock and split abalone/pearl blocks on the fingerboard. The pickups are Epiphone's single coil "New York" units, gold plated with adjustable poles and mounted in unique amber Catalin blocks. The controls are a master tone and volume, with a large 3-way lever selector switch mounted down near the lower body edge. The laminated maple body with a spruce top carries a lovely dark sunburst finish. This Deluxe has seen some play time since its birth in 1951 but remains a fine example of the final New York-made Epiphones, and an excellent playing instrument.
Overall length is 42 1/4 in. (107.3 cm.), 17 7/16 in. (44.3 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 1/4 in. (8.3 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). This guitar is an exceptionally fine playing example, with a recent neckset and refret so it's all ready for the next 60 years. There is some wear overall but for the most part the finish is in very nice condition. The top finish has some disturbance and small touch-ups here and there, mostly related to the typical pickguard distress common to Epiphones of this period. There is some pickwear up by the fingerboard extension and one area the treble side F-hole down to the switch where the dissolving original pickguard did mar the lacquer, but it has been touched up neatly and is fairly inconspicuous. The area around the volume knob has some scuffing through the finish.
The back of the neck shows some finish wear as well. The gold plating shows typical wear but the Frequensator tailpiece has never been broken or repaired, which is pretty rare by now. The original pickguard disintegrated long ago but has been replaced with a vintage correct pickguard by The Pickguardian. All other hardware is original and complete except for a repro switch tip. As noted this guitar has new period-correct fretwire, a trued fingerboard and fresh neckset. A very cool guitar and great survivor from the just pre-rock&roll era of big fat guitars with a big sound. Overall Very Good + Condition.
