Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a very unique and older general purpose microphone made by Electro Voice in the late 1940's. This is the early 1st generation 630 variant that has the polished polished chrome housing and looks pretty good but it no longer works and should be used for display, prop or repair purposes only. It comes with the period Turner stand shown and short cable.

This was the early 635 model based on the 630 that has the elongated lower pistol grip giving it a bit more character. The 635 was virtually identical to the 630 with a couple exceptions. The 635 had a dual impedance switch instead of the on / off switch giving you the option of High Impedance or Low impedance with the flick of a switch. The other difference was that the 635 had the revolutionary XLR cable attachment instead of the standard 3 pin screw on cable of that time. The XLR attachment would not become standard for microphones until the late 1970's so the 635 was ahead of it's time and was an expensive microphone because of these options.

Pic # 2 shows the 1940's era 630 model mic in an E.V catalog. Again, the 635 had the dual Z option as where the 630 had only the High Z setting.

The 635 was sold by E.V for about 20 years and while these are hard enough to come by the 1st gen 635 is even rarer than the 2nd gen 635 and don't come around very often. The 630 & 635 were both used for general broadcasting and could be used for singing as well with an old school "rockabilly" sound.

The mic housing / head is reminiscent of the jet engines being used by several American and Soviet fight planes of the day.

The 70 + year old microphone has typical lite wear as you can see in pictures with fine pitting on the front of the grill and a few very lite scratches and scuff marks and a couple small nicks but free of any dents or fractures. The chrome has a very nice luster still. The threads for the stand are perfect with zero stripping. The E.V label shows paint loss but still completely legible and has a beautiful patina. Overall this piece is an easy 7 on a scale of 1 - 10 physically speaking.

The joint mechanism works fine with plenty of tension. The impedance switch works great as well. Just needs a replacement element to get working again.

MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE...

The mic comes with a period Turner B-1 model desk stand from the 1940's. This unique desk stand has an older deco vibe and an all metal construction. It has a 6 inch brass riser with an aluminum painted base that has a lot of character. The riser shows wear and the brass has a nice patina while the base was repainted and has a nice hammered brown finish.

The base has the 4 original rubber pads. The stand shows about as much wear as the mic and a nice combo really.

Total dimensions with mic and stand are 12 1/2 inches tall X 4 3/4 inches wide.

There is also a short mic cable included to complete the look of the mic and is wired correctly in case you ever replace the element. The cable is appx 10 inches long and has the vintage Cannon female XLR connector for the mic with a period male 1/4 inch end connector. The cable is soft, pliable and looks great on the mic.

This will make a great display piece anywhere it sits in the home, studio or office.
