Tokai Hard Puncher PB-65 1980's 3-Tone Sunburst

These legendary lawsuit guitars caused quite a stir in the boardroom of the American guitar companies of the time. This one shows the results. The deceptive backwards F logo has been changed to a slightly less deceptive T logo. And the exact Fender headstock shape was changed to a deceptively close version. Case closed. Based on these changes, this one dates to about 1983 give or take two years.

This one is in good condition having obviously seen quite a lot of playing time. There are a multitude of light scratches on the back, none of which break the Finish. There are several dings along the sides of the guitar. The biggest dings are on the top right behind the bridge and also by the neck plate. Both are shown in the pictures.

The body is a nice lightweight Ash and it plays and sounds like a vintage Fender. The body really resonates when you pluck the strings.

This model was intended to replicate the 70's version of the P Bass with the black pickguard and the slightly narrower nut. The neck feels very comfortable and is a good combination between the big P Bass neck and the skinny Jazz Bass neck.

Tone-wise, this delivers a snarly, growling warm take on the classic P-thump; very appealing. This might be a little too roughed up to count as a collector's piece, but it's an absolutely brilliant vintage MIJ bass that oozes coolness and quality.
