1963 Echoplex "Brown Box" Pre EP-1. Built by Mike Battle in Cleveland, Ohio.
This Echoplex is one of the first 20 that left Battles' bench in 1963. It's considered the prototype as the circuitry differs slightly from an EP-1. I recently exchanged messages with Battles' grandson Bart Postlewait at Hartville Music in Ohio. He confirmed that 20 brown dental toolkit boxes were modified and vinyled to house the first batch and that he'd only seen one in his life. After much research and speaking with a couple well known Echoplex technicians, there are 4 of these known to exist.
This unit was recently serviced. New tape was loaded, new pinch roller installed, new CE filter cap installed, heads were cleaned/demagnetized, new belt and the unit was throughly cleaned. Motor is clean. There are no serial number markings. Pots date to 16th week of 1963.
