Did someone say cuteness overload? Ukuleles are like puppies that stay puppies and retain their cuteness forever. Go ahead and think of this ukulele as a 55 year old puppy.
As an instrument, this Uke absolutely kills. All original and made in Japan during the beginning of the Golden Age of Japanese instrument craftsmanship in the 60’s and 70’s. Neck is straight as an arrow, action is low and comfortable, plays and sounds beautiful, great intonation, holds tuning like a champ, all the boxes are checked! The mahogany neck is definitely quarter sawn! You can see the attractive grain pattern come at you at an angle. That very well may be Honduran Mahogany (RIP) which is totally not available anymore. The condition is fantastic, it was obviously never played, it looks almost brand new! I love that “Duke Kahanamoku” script across the front! Tastefully done and striking looking.
Duke Kahanamoku was a total badass who was one of the founders of surfing in Hawaii in the 50’s and 60’s. He was a Hawaiian Icon and badass enough to have a line of Ukuleles in his name.
I’ve played a lot of cool old ukes, a lot of great Kamakas and Martins, and this one is seriously up there with them. It has the great vibe, the sound, and the feel of a vintage uke that still has a ton of life ahead of it. There was a tiny bit of separation along the edge of the top where it meets the side on the lower bout, but it’s been repaired and is nice and stable. Great uke!
