Wavelength Audio Reactor Follower Coupled (RFC) 6550 Class A/A2 Barenaked Ladies front man Ed Robertson amplifier.
Ok probably a lot of questions here so let's start with that I make the touring amplifiers and ISO cabinets for Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies for the last 12 years or so. During that time I made a number of prototypes and one off amplifiers that the band tried and used. This amp had a bad tube in it and so I sent the backup amp and have kept this for awhile. But I realize having 20 amps here is a bit silly so I figure someone else would probably love to have this.
So what is it and what is Class A2. First I don't really build or design like other companies so I can't tell you this sounds like this or that. This amplifier is very quiet as this is a requirement for a band that uses ISO Speaker cabinets and noiseless stage. This is all tube as follows:
6072A->Volume->6072A->Tone Stack->Master->6C4 (basically half of a 6SN7)->6S4A (RFC)->6550 and the power supply is done with a GZ34/5AR4 tube rectifier.
So all single ended amplifiers are Class A as there is only one driving force against the output transformer. So the tube starts to clip or overdrive at about 60% of it's bias range. At this point the grid or the input of the tube starts to draw grid current and it rebias the tube. Ok now what if you directly coupled the driver stage to the grid of the output tube? Well then you get another 25% more power. This is how the Reactor Follower works basically.
Details: The 6072A dual triode filaments are regulated to keep the noise really low. This amps is full of high grade parts like MagneQuest of Philly hand designed and built output transformer, RFC inductor and several other magnetics. Use of Black Gate capacitors (look them up on eBay $$$) for the power supply. Combination of hand wired and a pcb for some of the components. All designed and built by me.
The amplifier comes with a cover from Coveramps. It is currently wired for 117/120V 60Hz operation. It is in very good condition right now. There is a small piece of pipping missing on the front right in the middle. It has 8 and 16 ohm outputs right now. I could rewire it to 4/8 or 4/16 if you like. As you can see the input is on the back as well as the output.
As I said this is a very quiet amp. Before covid a local guitar hero was here checking out some pedals and ask to play through it, so I plugged it into the 4x12 (2x Green Back UK, 2x Blue Alnico UK). Roger said ok you can turn it on. I said it's been on... He was a bit floored!
If you have questions please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks,
Gordon
