This is a gorgeous little Uke from back in the day that is holding it down as a fantastic little instrument! It’s got the feel of an entire chapter of American instrument history.
This uke sounds and plays really beautifully. Neck is straight, action is low, tuners hold tune perfectly, and the strings are vibrant and bouncy. It was really well cared for by a total pro who had it professionally repaired, there were a few cracks on the back that were repaired and cleated on the inside really well.
This is a little snapshot of time in the world of American instrument production. The 30’s were tough, my grandma told some pretty horrifying stories of the depression. The 1920’s were all about indulgence and decadence with crazy inlayed instruments made out of exotic woods. In the 30’s that was all stripped away and brought down to pure function, it wasn’t popular to flaunt anything fancy because there was so much poverty. A good instrument is a good instrument underneath any aesthetics, and the 1930’s produced some fantastic acoustic instruments like this Uke. Washburn is more now more synonymous with pointy metal guitars since the 1980’s I guess, but they have a huge history of making really nice acoustic instruments since way back in the day. The old Lyon & Healy, Washburn, and Oscar Schmidt instruments are all cut from the same cloth and they’re really fantastic. A lot of them like this uke have made it this far and they obviously got some fight left in them, they’re not giving up anytime soon. It’s from a different time where things were really built to last.
Great little uke, comes with a really nice case!
