Up for sale is a Late 80's Model Modulus Quantum 6 Neck-Through Bass Guitar.  This is the same model that Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead) played for some time and also the same model that Geoff Gould (founder of Modulus) currently plays.  I am not an expert regarding these basses, but I have learned a lot about this bass through an email conversation I had with Geoff Gould.  Most of the information I am giving here is based on that conversation.

According to G. Gould, this bass has all the hallmarks of a late 80's model Quantum 6:  35" scale, 24 frets, 2.5" neck width at the 24th fret, Gotoh tuners and a Stars Guitars bridge (went out of business in the late 80's).  The pickups are Bartolini Pickups designed by Geoff Gould.  The bridge pickup is a hum bucker, the middle one is a split-coil (like a P), and a hum-cancelled single coil in the neck position.  The wood is book matched top and back with what appears to be a rosewood.  It looks a little dark to be cocabola, but it’s possible.  The core wood is mahogany.  The racing stripes directly between the neck section and body section look also to be mahogany.  It looks like purple heart on the top face of the neck section as it runs through the body.  There is no serial number on the guitar which is totally consistent with a mid to late 80's model, as they did not serialize the thru-body instruments back then.  The odd thing about this bass is that the CTS pot codes (see pics) date to 1993 and 1994.  It is possible that the guitar was made in the early 90's as the mold still existed then (but was destroyed soon after when the wider necks became the norm).  It is also possible that the mold was old stock made in the mid to late 80's and that the guitar was not finished until the early 90's.  It is also possible, but not likely, that the electronics were replaced in the early 90's.  I guess we will never no for sure, but according to G. Gould, it should be considered a mid to late 80's model in all respects except the volume and tone pots.

There is a slight bend in the neck, which G. Gould stated is normal to accommodate the sine wave shape of the strings. With no string tension on the neck, it is almost perfectly flat.  At full tension, the string height at the 12th fret is about 4/32".  With the first and last fret depressed on the low B string, the relief at the 7th fret was 1/32". On the same fret with out holding down at any frets, the relief was 3/32".  This is within the acceptable range for a bass guitar, but depending on playing style, could be considered high.  A lighter gauge of strings may lower the string height (G. Gould designed a custom set of strings that you can buy on his website for just this purpose).  The bridge is adjusted to the lowest setting, but could be recessed in to the body along with some fretwork, to lower the string height (G. Gould stated this is not that big of a deal and they used to do it all the time).

Finally, I am not a bass player, but when I plugged it in and played it, I was blown away.  The quality and tone of this instrument is truly amazing.  All electronics work correctly and there are no issues that I could determine.  The bass is in excellent shape as well.  There are some gouges in the wood on the bottom left hand side that you can see in the picture, but other than that, there are no major defects.  Includes a Wolfpak soft shell case.  Sorry for the long winded description, but I want you to understand exactly what you are getting.  I am not an expert, so please view the pictures and use the zoom feature to determine characteristics and condition yourself.  Feel free to ask questions and I will do my best to answer.  If you are a Modulus Bass fan, you might want to act fast, as a bass like this at a reasonable price like this may not come along again for quite some time.  FEEL FREE TO SEND ME AN OFFER, I JUST MIGHT ACCEPT IT!
