Rickenbacker 4003S8 Left-handed 8-string Bass Guitar – Lefty SnowGlo
Famous Guitar Replicas presents this newly-rebuilt and refinished 1996 lefty Rickenbacker 4003S8 8-string bass. Typical of instruments of this era, this 8-string had suffered terribly from neck lift, which caused tremendous wing separation along the neck line where the wings attached to the center section. A previous “tech” attempted a multi-step repair which made this worse and brought the bass to total failure.
The bass has had all-new body wings fabricated and the entire neck rout plugged and minimally rerouted to accommodate what was needed for the pickup. It has been repainted in a SnowGlo scheme, and professionally refinished using automotive polyurethane, hand-sanded and buffed to a mirror finish. All other parts are original to the bass. The neck is now straight and rock-solid. The action is low and comfortable, there is plenty of life in the original frets, and it has a BIG sound! It is currently strung with 35/55/75/95-gauge strings for the roots and 12/19/31/43 for the octaves, which makes this easily playable and won’t cause hand fatigue after five minutes!
To note: Rickenbacker set the tailpiece slightly off-center in the factory, and had to compensate by slotting the saddles the other direction. In rebuilding and restoring this instrument, I kept the tailpiece in its original factory position. This does not affect playability at all, but there is some normal wear on the chrome on the tailpiece. There’s also some slight aging on the toaster-top chrome, as to be expected with a bass of this age. As far as finish, she’s got a radiant mirror reflection, but there is one paint line on the fingerboard that could have been scraped better. Oh well …
