RARE Hammond Ashley Associates Vertical Viola / Alto Violin
This unusual instrument is a large-bodied viola with an endpin, played like a cello. Variously called a Vertical Viola or Alto Violin (from the New Violin Family instruments).
This instrument was made in 1993 by the Hammond Ashley Associates shop in Seattle, WA and has the serial number VV 30.
- 20" body (top/back)
- 17 1/4" vibrating string length (nut to bridge)
- 33 1/2" total length
- Lightweight aluminum endpin that extends approx 18"
Includes soft bag. NO BOW. Player preference dictates whether viola or cello bow is used. Either is possible but most players use a light cello bow.
This instrument plays nicely. It was used for professional chamber music performances and recordings.
