Martin HD-18JB Jimmy Buffett Signature Dreadnought 1998

We recently acquired this guitar in a trade with a long time customer and friend of Maple Street Guitars. He is a fine player with a discerning ear and impeccable taste, and as such his considerable collection consists of cherry picked guitars that commonly are best examples with respect to their peers. In addition, he treats his instruments respectfully, and meticulously cares for them even when they might only be played rarely, as is the case with this guitar. Thus, it should not surprise one to discover that this superb HD-18JB is in exceptionally good condition with no trace of wear, and that it plays and sounds splendid as well.

Being a signature model, this guitar is, of course, unique. But, of its many cosmetic features listed below, the two that immediately captured our attention were the bindings and purflings. Typically, one does not see a mahogany Martin guitar with anything but black body bindings trimmed with black/white Boltaron purfling. But, instead, this mahogany guitar is fitted with grained ivoroid body bindings and its top is trimmed with herringbone purfling! Combined with the aged toner finish on the top, this choice of materials actually works beautifully with the mahogany, especially as the grained ivoroid has an aged appearance as well. As such, the contrasting elements have been harmonized in a manner that excites, rather than shocks, the senses.
