(See video below) This is an astonishingly beautiful, custom acoustic guitar, hand-built by a fabulous Vermont-based luthier named Scott Macdonald who used to be based in New York and who has built instruments for Lucinda Williams, members of The Band and a host of musicians famous and non-famous. Scott is widely regarded both nationally and internationally for his craftsmanship, his skill and his wealth of knowledge of stringed instruments.
This is a world-class instrument featuring some of the most gorgeous woodwork and resonant tonewoods I have ever heard on a guitar.
The top is a bell-like piece of old growth spruce and the sides and back are deep, rich, intoxicating Claro Walnut. The neck is a gorgeous mahogany.
On top of that, the alternating maple/rosewood rope binding pays homage to the beautiful worksmanship of early 20th century Weissenborn guitars.
The guitar is feather-light, finished with a hand rubbed oil finish that allows the wood to breathe and enhances the tone of the instrument. No tone-sucking polyurethane here.
The fingerboard and pickguard are a matching, rich ebony.
The guitar straddles the line between a small jumbo and an OM size instrument. The luthier refers to it as a small jumbo but it’s somewhat in between.
This instrument makes for a glorious finger picking experience. Its light bracing allows the strings to sustain seemingly endlessly. Additionally, when strummed with a flat pick, this guitar has volume and presence rivaling my 20 year old Gibson J-200.
This guitar was built over a multi-year period and by the time of its completion, as much as I love it, my needs and tastes had changed since when it was ordered. I’d love to see it go to someone who is going to play it a lot and appreciate it for its unique sound and beauty.
The guitar is outfitted with a piezo, under saddle pickup. The volume wheel is accessible directly inside the sound hole.
Guitar comes with a substantial Reunion Blues padded case which offers protection comparable to a hard case.
Please reach out with any questions.
