Luthier Jimmy Coppolo was always told that "they don't make 'em like they used to," so he builds his guitars and basses to compete with and complement the old school. His designs pay homage to the classic basses coveted by those who know them. Cutting his own bodies and magnets, and winding and wiring his own custom pickups and preamps, he infuses his own artistry, creativity, and technical range into instruments capable of modern feats while retaining the look, feel, sound, quality, and spirit of the classics.

The KBP4 Hippie Dippy Trippy is sort of my way of recapturing what the hippies were doing to their instruments back in the mid 60’s through very early ‘70’s- taking off the finish and globbing some sort of clear coat or oil finish. Alleva-Coppolo used to do the oil but liked the lacquer tone better. This bass has a very special fingerboard that called CNL (Caesar Nero Legno) after Alleva-Coppolo's master builder Jimmy Coppolo's dog Caesar who while he was here on earth, a black lab-chow mix and Jimmys best friend. The actual species of wood is not common at all, it is a hybrid of two different Brazilian rosewoods- Dlabergia Negra which is what we see commonly on Fenders, Gibsons, and Martins prior to 1968 and Dalbegia Sprucenia which is just a different type of Brazilian rosewood all together. Alleva-Copollo does not have much of that wood left, so it is extremely rare.

Alleva-Coppolo produces a limited number of basses every year. It is with this in mind that we are proud to offer Alleva Coppolo basses with built-in soul and hand-made feel, crafted in southern California by Jimmy himself.
