I listed this guitar a few years back but decided to keep it. But now its time to sell. This was listed again on 11/12/25.

The condition of this guitar is really better than excellent - it's near mint, but there's no near mint rating. I wish I could say the same thing for the case - more on that down the listing.

This is a factory 370/12 Byrd that was custom ordered. The serial number is XJ0939 which decodes to October, 1984 - three years before Rickenbacker began accepting orders for the McGuinn signature model. It comes with the original case, bridge cover and new springs for the bridge, polishing cloth and manual. I'll even throw in 2 sets of strings. The guitar was custom ordered with standard 12-string configuration (octave strings on the bass side) so there's also a new nut that was purchased from Rickenbacker if you want to change it over to the Rickenbacker configuration (octave strings on the treble side). It features X-bracing (not neck-through) and toaster top pickups. If you set the toggle switches to the way they are in the pictures it kicks in that classic Byrds sound.

I bought this guitar from the original owner in 1986 and it has only been out of my possession for 1 week in 2006 when it was stolen by an absolute moron - hence the damage to the case. He was too stupid to know that you slid the lock to the side to pop the latch, so he took a pair or pliers (as you do) and broke the hasps off. Being such a moron, he was arrested within a week and I got the guitar, with a now damaged case, returned.

This is the only Rickenbacker 12 string I have ever seen with non-Rickenbacker stringing, other than a picture of the very first 12-String Rickenbacker made in 1963, which was one serial number before George Harrison's, and two serial numbers before Mike Campbell's. It may be a one of a kind. It's far better than the McGuinn models. It's 41 years old and in near mint condition. If you are a Rickenbacker enthusiast you know that this is a great guitar at a fair price.

Only John Hall, if he's still at Rickenbacker, knows how many of these things were made.

I know that the $300.00 shipping may seem a little steep, but I'll include a copy of the receipt in a message. If it's less, I'll refund you the difference, and if it's more I'll eat it. In the end, you’ll be glad you paid a few extra dollars for a good pack job. If you live within 400 miles of southwest Ohio, I'd seriously consider a local pickup.
