This particular CV-12 is the farthest thing from a stock cv-12, which is already a great mic to begin with (yes, this is the $500 mic Taylor Swift made famous). I am the guy who has posted the how to (DIY) tutorial on Gearslutz which also describes why this mic is so amazing and how to upgrade it. I flip these quite often and my cost is only slightly lower than what I am charging. It’s a Honda Civic that has been modified to do everything a Bughatti Veyron does. Here’s the quick details:

- Upgraded with a brand new RK-12 capsule and custom supersaddle
- Upgraded PCB components (Nichon caps etc)
- Upgraded tube to a hand selected Telefunken, Mullard, tungsol or GE halo.
- upgraded power supply components.
- Other light variations and modifications such as shortening the capsule leads, removing certain redundant capacitors for more accurate response and more.
- Mic and PSU I/O cleaned with Deoxit D5
- custom hand made wooden box available (as shown) upon request
- I can also build these from scratch from a Carvin donor mic for even better results for around $1400 if desired (see pics towards the end of this listing. This is a ground up build that takes 2-3 weeks custom order.
MY COST TO BUILD THIS MIC : Mic: Used it's around $500-600
capsule w/ship: $175
V-251 Circuit: $259
PSU mod parts: $200
Telefunken NOS tube:$150-200
Shipping : $100 New wiring, solder, misc, etc: $150
TOTAL : $1400+
Profit: Only $150
These are not cheap to build and made to order so please allow 2-3 week turnaround for delivery.

I use only the best Kester leaded solder and re-seat the stock components where needed as well. Leads have been trimmed much shorter than the stock wiring which improves the mics fidelity and range.
NOTE* The second half of pictures are for the optional Carvin donor build in which I can also build you a C12 clone from the ground up using nothing but the frame rails and the head basket and nothing else (details below).

In 2009 I assisted on a Bjork record at Electric Lady Studios in studio A where I worked as GA and assistant for many years. The session has become famous among recording engineers and net forums because it beat out a C12 in a shootout. Chief engineer asked me to A/B a modified Avantone CV-12 with the actual AKG C12 which of course cost $20,000+. A room full of the worlds greatest engineers could hardly tell the difference and so solidified it’s legendary status in the recording world. They sent the C12 back to Dreamhire and we used this mic on the session. I was that GA who did the test and since then have used this mic on almost everything I’ve tracked as my go to utilitarian mic.

I own a cintage U67, Manley refC, Geffels, Blue Kiwi, C12vr and many other great mics and this is just as good as any any of them... well, maybe short the U67 ;
