This is an extremely rare guitar from 1958. It includes the hand painted logo on the headstock by it's maker Emile Grimshaw.
I’ve slashed the price to a real bargain as I need the cash. It’s a chance to get this for a great price.
A high quality and handmade instrument from the late 50s. These guitars have a cult status from being used by the likes of Joe Brown, Pete Townsend and Joe moretti. The former being the session guitarist for Johnny Kidd & The Pirates for the classic recordings of Shakin' All Over & Restless. I did some research which suggests that Joe Morreti played the lead parts using a Grimshaw SS Deluxe. This guitar certainly nails that sound!
Its also quite unique as it is a short scale neck with a hollow body. I would say it's somewhat a cross between a Gibson ES-330 and a Fender Jaguar! The sound is really vintage and woody. The pick ups are very clear and balanced. You can get pretty much any sound out of the guitar using the controls.
The neck is quite wide at the nut and has some depth and fatness to it as most 50s guitars do. This combined with it being short scale makes for a very comfy neck that is easy to get around. The width on the string spacing makes chords and notes especially clear with plenty of sustain. I've used this for rock n roll, blues, Jazz, country, rockabilly, surf and it handles it all brilliantly.
It has recently been set up by a professional luthier here in London and fitted with new frets as some of the old ones were loose. The action is now really comfortable and low. The pickup switch has also been changed a les paul style switch as the original was broken. I also added a strap pin to the tail end (without any extra holes) so it's possible to use with a strap. Electronics are fully working and it plays beautifully. It is a vintage guitar so does have plenty of signs of use and age. There is some discolouring and ageing to the binding in the neck in particular. One section looks to be replaced sometime ago. There is no issue with playability and the binding on neck is all in all more of a visual issue.
I It will come with a new Hiscox hardcase. There are some newer pictures in the gallery detailing all the work that has been done.
I'll be very sad to see it go. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to see it.
Collection from E3 is ideal, or I could possibly deliver depending on where you are. I travel around the UK a fair bit. In theory I could post if costs are covered. Please ask first. It comes in a Hiscox hardcase and I can post in an outer guitar box, well packed.
Cheers
