Amazing rarity from the 1960s - possibly the first "keytar" ever made!
The Tubon was invented by Swedish musical instrument company Jon Mustad AB of Gothenberg in the mid to late 1960s. It was intended to provide an amplified alternative to acoustic string instruments, and found favour with a few Scandinavian folk bands.
More famously, it was used by Kraftwerk in their early days and was allegedly used by the Beatles. I say allegedly because the story is that it was intended to be used on the intro of Strawberry Fields, but the sheet music which has "Tubon" written on it shows chords, and the Tubon is a strictly monophonic instrument. Whether the Beatles ever really owned one may be a myth, as the only pictures showing Paul McCartney playing one were taken backstage at a concert in Berlin. The Scandinavian support band used a Tubon, and it's most likely this is the Beatles only encounter with one.
I acquired two Tubons from a long running British folk band, and this one is in working condition (the other one is almost immaculate but non-working). It is battery powered and includes a lead to connect it to an amplifier. The socket is a DIN one, which may be able to power the instrument from an external supply if wired correctly from what I've read, but is currently only wired to output audio. There are voice selection buttons as well as dials to control volume and vibrato in the hand grip position. The original strap is in place, and the thick cardboard case is complete albeit a little tatty.
