Handmade by luthier Ken Ratcliff in Kentucky, the El Toro Silverangel is a fantastic two-point style mandolin. Radiused fretboard with large frets, antler base custom bridge, engraved James tailpiece. Gorgeous flamed maple back, sides and neck. A few minor issues that you might not notice: a small section of the binding needs to be reglued, some of the tuner bushings are not sitting flush, and the spacing between the A strings is a bit wider at the nut than the spacing between the E strings (visually noticeable but I don’t notice it when playing). The truss rod cover is a bit oversized and it conceals a few tiny holes from previously installed covers as well as a joint in the peg head overlay. Nothing to fear, just full disclosure. It’s worth mentioning that there is an odor coming from inside the mandolin body, it’s not cigarette smoke but it’s a musty/earthy smell, not pleasant but not overwhelming to me. Ken has a reputation for building excellent sounding mandolins and the El Toro is a wonderful sounding and playing instrument. Gator poly-foam case included.
