From the Zildjian product page:
The original vintage Zildjian 20” K Custom Ride debuted in 1987 and holds a legendary place in cymbal history. Co-developed with drum icon Dave Weckl, it was initially created as a one-off model to solve a specific problem: providing a cymbal that combined the dark, trashy tonal characteristics of the K Zildjian line with the extreme clarity, high volume, and precise "ping" required to cut through high-decibel electric fusion and rock music.
Before expanding into a diverse sub-series in the 1990s, this original 1980s model was simply cataloged as "The" K Custom Ride.
Vintage Design & Structural Features
• The Hybrid Hammering Concept: Visually and structurally unique, it combined heavy traditional circumferential computer-controlled machine hammering with prominent, scattered circular hammer patterns designed to mimic hand-hammering.
• Completely Unlathed Surfaces: Both the top and bottom surfaces were left entirely unlathed. Eliminating the lathing concentrated the acoustic vibration, drying out excess build-up and preventing the cymbal from washing out under heavy play.
• The "Monster" Bell: Features an enlarged, heavy, clear bell that mimics properties of a heavy rock cymbal (such as a Z series). Striking it delivers a piercing, anvil-like clarity.
• Brilliant Finish: These vintage models were given a high-polish Brilliant Finish from the factory, which added an upper-end shimmer and high-frequency "glass" over the dark base casting.
