Gibson 1965 J-50, the natural-finish counterpart to Gibson's enduring standard J-45, with the crisp, snappy strum tone typical of the mid-'60s.
Because a natural finish shows the wood grain directly, the J-50 has always been built with carefully selected tonewoods. Unlike the sunburst J-45, it could not hide the grain, so spruce with especially attractive figure was chosen. The thick large pickguard typical of the '60s and the deep amber aging of the top give it real vintage presence.
More than 60 years of aging have matured the spruce top and mahogany back and sides. The sharp attack of the adjustable saddle, a hallmark of '60s Gibsons, combines with a full low-mid response developed through years of playing, making it an excellent accompaniment instrument for vocals.
The narrow neck adopted around 1965 makes chords easy to grip, even for smaller hands, and handles cutting and quick chord changes very well. This is a practical instrument rather than a museum piece, fully usable as a main guitar for live and recording work today.
