Gibson BR-6 Lap Steel with case and original tuners.

The tuners are crumbling and need new ends put on them, they are included with the instrument and case. The volume and tone knobs are not original. The electronics are original and the pickup sounds excellent. Very strong and clear.

I put real Kluson plank tuners on for the time being. Your choice on if you change them back to original.

The Gibson BR-6 is one of Gibson's most popular post-war electric lap steel guitars, produced from 1946 to roughly 1960 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Key Specifications & Design

  • Body Shape: Classic hourglass / guitar-shaped solid mahogany body with top binding (and sometimes back binding depending on the year).
  • Neck & Scale: Originally produced with a rare square neck for its debut year in 1947 before transitioning to a round neck starting in 1948. Features a 22 1/2" scale length and a 2 1/4" metal nut.
  • Fingerboard: Black metal or hardwood fingerboard with painted fret/position markers (typically 29 fret lines/markers).
  • Electronics: Single-coil pickup (P-90 style / non-adjustable Alnico design), paired with master volume and tone controls.
  • Hardware: Characteristic gold-painted or gold plexi/plastic control plate and hand rest/bridge cover, plus strip-style tuners.
  • Finish: Most commonly found in a classic Cremona/vintage sunburst finish, though later variants (like the BR-6B) featured a black finish.

History & The "BR-6 Outfit"

  • Original Package: When first introduced, the BR-6 was frequently sold as a "Special Hawaiian Outfit" bundled together with its matching BR-6 tube amplifier.
  • Pricing: Originally retailed as a set for $99.50 in the late 1940s, though by 1949 the lap steel could be purchased individually for $52.50.
  • Market Value Today: Vintage models in good, playable condition generally trade on the used market (via platforms like Reverb and vintage dealers) for roughly $600 to $1,400 USD, depending on originality, condition, and whether the original case is included.
