Gibson Les Paul 1956 - Goldtop
1956 Gibson Les Paul Standard Goldtop – Incredible Patina, Lightweight, Killer V Neck, Woody P-90 Tone
Offered here is an exceptionally vibey 1956 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop with some of the most incredible natural aging and patina we've seen. Hailing from the Deep South, this guitar has lived a long and colorful life, and it certainly shows. The original gold finish has developed extensive green oxidation throughout, with areas where the clear coat has worn away to expose the gold underneath. The result is a beautifully weathered, naturally aged Goldtop with the kind of character and authentic patina that simply cannot be replicated.
Weighing in at just 8.5 pounds, this is an exceptionally comfortable and resonant example. The neck has a fantastic, naturally broken-in V profile that feels absolutely perfect in the hand. Decades of playing have given it that smooth, worn-in feel that makes a great vintage guitar so addictive. This is the kind of guitar you pick up and immediately feel at home with.
The original P-90 pickups are strong and sound phenomenal, delivering that perfect airy, woody, and articulate tone that makes these mid-1950s Goldtops so desirable. The guitar is incredibly lively and responsive, with tons of character and vintage warmth.
As you might expect from a guitar with this much history, it has a few repairs and changes worth noting:
- Finish: Extensive original finish wear, checking, green patina, and areas of worn clear coat throughout. All naturally acquired over the guitar's lifetime.
- Neck and frets: Fantastic broken-in V neck profile. The original frets show substantial wear but the guitar still plays well without buzzing.
- Headstock repair: An old, repaired headstock break, photographed in detail.
- Body repairs: The guitar also sustained an impact to the treble-side horn, leaving a dent and a couple of repaired cracks extending from the horn. These are also photographed.
- Electronics: When the guitar arrived, it had non-original potentiometers. We sourced and installed a complete original 1956 Gibson wiring harness. While not original to this particular guitar, the harness is genuine period-correct vintage Gibson equipment.
- Hardware: The stop tailpiece is from an early 1960s Gibson. The original studs and original no-wire ABR-1 bridge remain with the guitar.
Overall, this is a phenomenal player-grade 1956 Goldtop with an incredible look, feel, and sound. The combination of its lightweight body, perfectly worn-in V neck, and gorgeous greened-out gold finish gives it an unmistakable vintage personality. It has all the mojo and character that collectors and players chase in a well-loved 1950s Les Paul.
With clean, excellent-condition originals commanding roughly twice our asking price, this represents an outstanding opportunity to own a genuine 1956 Goldtop at a fraction of the cost. If you've been looking for a real-deal vintage Les Paul with tons of natural patina, an incredible neck, and exceptional tone, this one is hard to beat.
Comes with Modern Hardshell case (Although we have a 1956 Cali Girl case from another guitar we could sell for a premium).
