Gibson 1955 Les Paul Junior in Sunburst. Since its 1954 debut, the Les Paul Junior has thrilled legends such as Keith Richards and Leslie West and helped write the history of rock and roll.
With a single dog-ear P-90 on a flat-top mahogany body, it stands as one of the purest, most unpretentious rock guitars in electric guitar history. Early examples from 1955, the year after its release, come from the golden age for both wood quality and P-90 sound, and are sought after by vintage enthusiasts worldwide. After 70 years, this example has developed outstanding resonance, with strong, full midrange and expansive overtones.
The high-turn P-90 single coil combines edgy, gritty highs with a thick midrange push approaching a humbucker. Using only picking dynamics and the volume control, it goes from chiming cleans to roaring, amp-pushing crunch. Select quality mahogany, thoroughly dried out over 70 years, transmits string vibration directly from neck to body end, so the whole instrument resonates as one with a strong acoustic voice.
The neck shape is not overly tapered and fills the palm with a solid feel, supporting thick sustain and handling everything from rough chord strumming to expressive bends. The simple wiring with no extra switches or circuits gives remarkable pick response and excellent clarity, translating the player's touch directly into sound.
