STAR Drum is a new flagship model that takes the know-how for bringing out the best in shell resonance—cultivated through Starclassic—and pushes it one step further. The lineup features Bubinga shells, known for their rich resonance and fat tone, and Maple shells, known for their bright, open sound. In addition to innovative ideas that enhance sound—such as the distinctive shell construction and the new “Super Resonant Mounting System” for toms—it also incorporates new features designed to improve setup convenience, like the “Quick-Lock Tom Bracket.”

The STAR Maple series employs TAMA’s proprietary “Solid Core Ply” shell construction. The bright, open sound of maple—familiar to all—is transformed into a richer, more resonant, and powerful tone. This opens up new possibilities for maple shells.

Maple is the most popular and longest-used wood among drum shell materials. By adopting an unprecedented shell construction, STAR Drums produces a sound distinct from that of conventional maple shells. This shell construction features a 2mm-thick “core ply”—thicker than usual—in the center, sandwiched between two 1.5mm-thick maple plies on the inner and outer sides, respectively. By combining this core ply with plywood to achieve exceptional strength, STAR has managed to reproduce the sound character typically associated with thick solid-ply shells—which tend to be heavy—in an ultra-thin 5mm-thick shell.

Thanks to this unique shell construction, STAR’s maple shells deliver not only the bright, open sound typical of maple shells but also rich dynamics and a full-bodied tone.
