1948 Gibson L-4 Archtop with Original Lifton Case
This is a 1948 Gibson L-4, and it looks like it spent most of its life in the case. The frets are perfect, the action is low and the neck angle is great. Guitars from the late 1940s rarely turn up this clean.
How It Sounds
A carved-top L-4 is built to project. Hit a chord and it jumps right off the top, with a quick, punchy attack and a woody midrange that sits right where a rhythm guitar should be. The bass is full but doesn’t get boomy. The trebles are clear and sweet without turning harsh. Each note speaks fast and stays focused, so voicings come through clean even in a crowded room. Comp a swing tune and you get the bark and chop players chase these guitars for. Play it softer, fingerpicking or strumming lightly, and it opens up into a round, airy sound that’s a real pleasure to sit with. It’s loud for a 16-inch archtop and sounds great acoustically, and it would be just as at home in front of a microphone.
How It Plays
The neck angle is great and the action is low, so it’s comfortable to play all the way up the neck. The frets are in perfect shape. You won’t find wear grooves or flat spots, because this guitar barely got played.
Condition
Overall it’s in great shape. A few things to know about:
- Pickguard: It’s missing. Celluloid guards from this era often break down and crumble over the years, and that’s most likely what happened here.
- Tailpiece: It looks like the tailpiece was moved at some point. There are filled holes under the tailpiece, and one filled hole you can see. We don’t know why it was moved. The bridge is lined up well, nothing is pulling on it, and the guitar plays fine, but we want you to know about it.
Case
It comes with its original Lifton case with the purple interior. All the latches work.
