Martin 1972 D-41. Introduced in 1969 as a lower-cost model with less ornamentation than the D-45, the D-41 uses the same grade of tonewoods while reducing the abalone trim, offering the rich tone of Martin's top-tier 40 series.

The top is German spruce, known for its stiffness and rich overtones and also used for violins and other string instruments. The body edges feature white binding plus beautiful abalone purfling, and the rosette is also inlaid with vivid abalone. Back and sides are quartersawn Indian rosewood; although Martin's rosewood changed around 1970, this example shows beautifully striped wood. Unlike the D-45, the sides and back lack abalone trim.

The ebony fingerboard features abalone hexagon inlays as beautiful as the D-45's, with white binding on the fingerboard edges. The mahogany neck has a comfortable V shape, neither too thick nor too thin. The ebony bridge has a short saddle, with white bridge pins featuring abalone dots. The rosewood-veneered headstock carries the vertical logo denoting the top grade, and the rounded-corner headstock shape is characteristic of this period. Grover 102 tuners with PAT stamp offer smooth gearing for comfortable tuning.

The D-41 is not a budget D-45, but rather ideal for players who find the D-45 "too resonant" — though its rich, full-bodied tone is a true hallmark of Martin's 40 series.
