Gibson 1993 Special Edition J-200 — a flame maple J-200 from the period when the Bozeman factory was hitting its stride.
[Staff comment: Inoue]
The J-200's predecessor, the SJ-200, debuted in 1938. With its large body, moustache bridge, and vine-pattern pickguard, it remains Gibson's flagship with an unchanged look. This 1993 Special Edition was built at the Bozeman, Montana factory under Ren Ferguson in the early '90s. J-200s from this era, when the factory was building its reputation, are drawing renewed attention for their fine woods and careful craftsmanship.
A standout detail is the plate on the back of the headstock: the black-finished headstock back bears "Montana Special" and the date June 23, 1993, marking this as a Special Edition.
Sitka spruce top with eastern flame maple back and sides; the strongly figured back changes its look with the angle of the light. The 5-piece neck alternates maple and ebony, with two black lines running from headstock to heel and figure in the outer maple as well — plenty to admire even from behind. Nut width 44mm and 645mm scale give comfortable string spacing for both strumming and fingerstyle. The sound has the clear definition of a spruce/maple combination along with the volume of a jumbo body; it stays clear even when strummed hard, making it a reliable accompaniment guitar for singer-songwriters. Comes with a hard case.
