For Sale is a beautiful, early example of Bill Collings workmanship. Mr. Collings gained his accreditation as a master builder while building custom guitars for Mr. George Gruhn and others before starting his own business. It is generally accepted that some of the finest guitars ever built by Bill Collings came out of the early days, when working as a one-man builder in his small shop. Serial number 553 would make this 1992. Collings has always been one of the better crafted guitars of the day, but the early ones were exceptionally well crafted to prove himself worthy of this market, and that he did. This specific guitar not only exhibits that craftsmanship and tone, but it has also obviously been well cared for and still looks great. This guitar is designated D1-A, it has a beautiful Adirondack top with very nice straight and exceptional perpendicular grain that is rarely found now days. This is the kind of top sought out by old school craftsman for exceptional tonal qualities. Note that 1992 was the first year Bill ventured to use Adirondack. The back, sides, and neck are solid rich, ribboned Honduran mahogany. Except for upgraded buffalo horn bridge pins and an addition of a strap button; this guitar is complete original with no cracks or repairs of any kind and no repairs or adjustments needed.
The action is very good with a modified V neck with good height left on the bridge saddle. 1 11/16" nut width, 25 1/2" scale. Frets are still like new. Prewar scalloped Sitka spruce braces. All the warmth and clear, dry bass tones you expect from a deep bodied, dreadnaught, mahogany guitar. The mids are loaded with punch and clean highs that do not get lost. Add that to unusually good sustain and volume and you have a bluegrass flat/finger pickers dream guitar.
The only sign of wear are tiny dings that can barely be seen and small buckle rash in picture. Comes with a non-original gator hard case. Please look at the pictures and ask any questions. I have described as accurately and thoroughly as I can. $6,000 or best offer with free shipping In CONUS!
