Martin 1979 D-41 — the glittering looks and bell-like ring of the 40-series, matured by nearly half a century, without the astronomical price of a D-45 or the fragility of a pre-war vintage.
Born as the high-end model just below the D-45, the D-41 features beautiful abalone inlay around the top and hexagon fingerboard inlays that shine under stage lights. Nearly 50 years since its 1979 build have thoroughly dried and aged the wood; the thick, focused tone typical of 1970s Martins has fully opened up through years of playing, delivering deep, powerful roar on hard strumming and rich, enveloping sustain on delicate arpeggios.
1970s Martins with non-scalloped X-bracing are highly regarded by top professionals as tough, working guitars thanks to their sturdy construction — this one can serve as a main instrument for modern live and recording work without excessive worry. 1970s Martins are now firmly established as true vintage and prices are rising rapidly worldwide; good, gig-ready D-41s are becoming hard to find.
[SPEC]
TOP: Spruce
BACK/SIDES: Mahogany
FINGERBOARD/BRIDGE: Rosewood
NECK: Mahogany 3P
NUT WIDTH: 42.5mm
SCALE: 645mm
CASE: Original Hard Shell Case
[Repairs / Replaced Parts / Cosmetic Condition]
Fine weather checking throughout tells the story of its life. No cracks after nearly 50 years, suggesting it has been carefully maintained. The neck has been over-lacquered; the body finish appears to be original as far as we can see. One additional tuner screw hole, likely from previously installed Waverly-type tuners; now re-fitted with 1970s Grover (unstamped) gold tuners — a period-correct choice for a '79. Pickguard replaced from black to a larger tortoise-pattern guard (painted). Martin logo missing from the hard case; the hardware at the bottom end of the case is dented in.
[Playing Condition]
No buzzing or choking; playing condition is good. Action at the 12th fret: 2.4mm low E side, 1.9mm high E side. Saddle protrusion approximately 1.0mm.
