The 1962 Martin F-65 is a rare, double-cutaway thinline hollowbody electric guitar. It was part of Martin's first major electric line, originally priced at $300 and today valued around $3,250 on the vintage market. Only about 566 to 585 units of the F-65 were ever built.
Key Specifications
- Body: Double-cutaway thinline hollowbody with F-holes, laminated maple top and body (~2 inches thick)
- Neck: Mahogany neck with a Brazilian rosewood fretboard and traditional Martin feel
- Pickups & Electronics: Dual DeArmond Dynasonic (or 2000) single-coil pickups, independent volume and tone controls, and a 3-way selector switch
- Hardware: Kluson Deluxe tuners, a signature floating Lucite/Plexiglas bridge, and an optional Bigsby vibrato tailpiece
- Finish Options: Shaded Sunburst / Honey Burst
Historical Context & Collectibility
- Short-Lived Run: Produced in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, from 1962 through 1965, before Martin shifted focus back to their dominant acoustic line.
- Rarity: The F-65 was the top-of-the-line model compared to its single-cutaway siblings (the F-50 and F-55).
- Collector Notes: Original Lucite/Plexiglas bridges are known to crack or fail under string tension, making surviving all-original examples quite scarce.
