Here’s a 1965 Fender Jaguar from one of the most interesting stretches in the model’s run. It has an L series serial on the neck plate and an unbound rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot inlays. Those details put it in early 1965, before the changes that came later that year.
The L Plate and the Unbound Board
Fender used the L series plate from late 1962 until the larger F plate replaced it late in 1965. White binding on the fingerboard showed up around September 1965, and the pearloid block inlays didn’t arrive until about the middle of 1966. An L plate with an unbound board and pearloid dots tells you this neck and body come from before both of those changes. Pearloid dots are bright and catch the light, so they’re easy to tell apart from the matte clay dots used before them. Collectors look for this combination, and you won’t find it on later Jaguars.
Condition and Originality
It’s in great shape overall. Other than the tremolo arm and the case, everything on the guitar is original. The electronics, pickups, hardware and finish are all as they left Fender.
How It Plays
It plays and sounds great. The neck has a comfortable carve that fills your hand without feeling clubby, and it’s easy to stay on for a long set. The Jaguar pickups give you that bright, cutting single coil sound, and the onboard rhythm and lead circuits let you switch between two preset tones. At 8.07 pounds, it’s a nice weight for a Jaguar.
