The Mattel Synsonics Drums are a vintage analog drum machine and cult-favorite musical instrument released by the Mattel company in 1981. Though originally marketed as an affordable, toy-like novelty, its true analog architecture earned it a permanent home in professional studios and live setups for legendary acts like Kraftwerk and Saga.

Key Features & Architecture

• Analog Sound Engine: The unit features six distinct, classic 1980s sounds: a snare, cymbal, closed hi-hat, two toms, and a punchy kick drum. The first tom includes a manual pitch control that can tune across a five-octave range.
• Playable Pads: It is built with four velocity-sensitive, rubberized circular pads intended to be played with drumsticks or fingers, mapped to the snare, cymbals, and toms.
• Volatile Sequencer: The device includes a built-in 128-step quantized sequencer that allows users to record and store up to three separate 16-beat patterns. Notably, the kick drum does not have its own physical pad and can only be triggered via the sequencer or bottom control buttons. Because it lacks internal save memory, all sequences vanish the moment the unit is powered off.
• Note Multipliers: A standout interface quirk is its set of dedicated hit-multiplier buttons, which immediately generate continuous quarter, eighth, or sixteenth-note patterns for rapid rhythm building.
• Power & Output: It runs on either a 9V AC adapter or six C-cell batteries. It outputs audio via a 1/4-inch headphone/AUX stereo jack.
