Here we have the vintage Korg guitar synthesizer X-911 in excellent condition! The Korg X-911 is a vintage monophonic analog guitar synthesizer and effects processor released in 1980 by Keio Electronic Laboratories (Korg). Unlike modern guitar synths that require specialized hexaphonic pickups, the X-911 processes a standard 1/4" audio input from any regular electric guitar, microphone, or instrument. It operates using real-time pitch-to-voltage conversion, mapping the fundamental frequency of the incoming guitar signal to a control voltage (CV) that drives an internal voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO).
Core Architecture & Layout:
The unit features a distinctive compact layout with 16 knobs and 12 colored touch pads, split into two parallel sound-generation sections that can be blended together using a central balance crossfader slider:
- Instrument Section (Presets): This side houses six preset voices meant to emulate conventional instruments or treated guitar sounds: Electric Bass, Tuba, Trumpet, Distortion Guitar, Violin (with unique attack control), and Flute. Most of these presets include dedicated tone or filter controls.
- Synthe Section (Custom Waveforms): This side provides direct access to pure analog synthesis waveforms denoted by graphical icons: Pulse, Ramp (Sawtooth), and Square. Users can shape these using a dedicated Attack and Decay envelope generator, modify the cutoff frequency and resonance of its integrated Voltage Controlled Filter (VCF), and utilize a 3-way touch sensitivity switch.
Key Features & Integration
- Monophonic Limitations & Tracking: Because it relies on tracking a single fundamental frequency, it can only process one note at a time. Playing chords or letting multiple strings ring out causes erratic, unpredictable, and glitchy tracking artifacts—a limitation that many modern ambient and noise musicians embrace as part of its "unstable" vintage charm. Using a compressor pedal before the input is highly recommended to smooth out the dynamics and stabilize tracking.
- Expression and Modulation: The X-911 supports portamento (glide control between notes), an interval setting to offset the synth pitch from the guitar pitch, an analog octaver (including a heavy 16-foot sub-bass option), a "Hold" parameter, and front-panel inputs that can be toggled via footswitches.
- Analog Connectivity: To interface with other gear from the MS-series synth family (such as the Korg MS-20), the X-911 is equipped with CV/Trigger inputs and outputs. It can be controlled by a vintage synthesizer or a modern CV step-sequencer. Notably, it follows Korg’s vintage standards: Hz/V (Hertz per Volt) for pitch scaling and an S-Trigger (Short Circuit Trigger).

NOTE: Too cool. Late last summer we shipped a 1967 MapleGlo Rickenbacker 6-12 Converter 'comb' guitar to Billy Corigan of Smashing Pumpkins! We also then shipped a vintage 50 watt Marshall head to L.A. studio-touring guitarist extraodinaire, Michael Landau, and 2 vintage guitars to Jack White's organization down in Nashville just a few days before his 50th. birthday! mmm? Add 'The Kentucky Head Hunters' to the list, just sold Greg a cool little 50's Valco tube combo amp!
Gordy's Music has become a Detroit institution! Our shop was used as a filming location for a few films like "Miracle in Motor City" a Christmas movie on Lifetime (featuring Smoky Robinson). We've supplied gear for movies including "Bill & Ted Face The Music" with Keanu Reeves. We've got decades of celebrity customers, including recent visits from Beck, Eric Johnson, and we recently sold Billy Joel's bassist a cool Gibson SG he is in love with. One day a while back Andre 3000 and his group stopped in to browse as they were playing Masonic Temple that night and right after that we sold an old oil can Morley Wah Vibrato pedal to Credence Clearwater Revival's thee John Fogerty!
We are having and have had a lot of fun here at Gordy's Music! I was just remembering about 35 years ago a tour bus pulled up to our little shop, and who rolls right in and hangs out for an hour? Lenny Kravitz and his entire group, right about the same time I was selling many guitars to and chauffeuring around Dee Dee Ramone who had an apartment a block down from my house.
