The Solid State Logic Alpha Link MX 16-4 is a Madi driven AD/DA Converter with 16 inputs and 4 Outputs. The unit is in excellent condition cosmetically; the reason for "fair" condition listing is because 4 inputs (11, 12, 13 & 14) have noise and distortion. However, the unit has been fully tested with a Distortion Analyzer (HP-8903B) and all the other inputs and outputs are up to spec. Note: this coverter uses optical Madi to communicate with a computer or other Madi equipped interfaces. To use this unit with a computer will require a Madi card.
This unit has been paired with a complimentary SSL Alpha Link MX 4-16 (4 ins & 16 outs) since being purchased 13 years ago. Both units have been in constant use until being retired from service in September 2026. Both units are also available here on Reverb.com, along with 2 SSL MadiXtreme PCIe cards and associated Madi optical cables and Wordclock cables. Also in my store, are custom. 4-channel DB-25 to TRS interfaces available for the 4 ins or 4 outs.
Technical Note Regarding the 4 Inputs with Noise Prolem: These SSL Alpha Link MX Series Converters are prone to heating up in the rack. If they are installed in a warm environment, it is recommended to leave one empty space above and below the units. Additionally, I would recommend a low-speed fan to move a nominal amout of air flow around the units. If blank panels are used to fill the afore mentioned empty rack spaces, be sure to use vented panels, as to not restrict the air flow.
I'm pretty sure this is what caused damage to the channels 11, 12, 13, & 14. I first noticed the problem on a warm summer day when the signal LEDs were intermittently flashing on those channels. Through further investigation I discovered that the converter units were pretty hot to touch. At that time, I had empty space between the units, but had solid blank panels installed in the spaces, and no fan to move air.
After removing the blank panels and placing a low-speed fan on the rack, the signal LEDs went back to normal operation and the unit enclosures remained cool to touch. However, I later realized that those same channels had become noisy and so I quit using them. Fortunately, I had enough remaining good inputs to continue using the unit for at least another year without any other problems.
