Since its introduction in 1942, the J-45 has been a best-selling model. Often called “The Workhorse” by many artists, it is one of Gibson’s most reliable and enduring standard models.

This is a rare all-Hawaiian Koa J-45, a pre-owned 1992 model.

This J-45 features the rare specification of Hawaiian Koa for the top. While the J-45 is strongly associated with Mahogany, examples with a Hawaiian Koa top are seldom seen on the market. Its fine, beautifully figured grain gives each instrument a distinct appearance.

This is a rare limited model from a period when Gibson was able to use highly figured Hawaiian Koa in such a generous way.

Its sound combines the warmth and tightness characteristic of Koa in the low end, a focused midrange with a dry sweetness, and bright, articulate highs. Sitting tonally between Mahogany and Maple, it retains the fullness and responsive character expected from a J-45. It responds quickly to a light touch and offers excellent balance from fingerstyle to strumming.

There is weather checking around the lower area of the back heel, as well as marks on the front and rear of the headstock that appear to have been made by a tuner or capo. The pickguard has been replaced with a clear, large-guard-style guard, allowing the grain to be enjoyed to its fullest. The guitar is exceptionally well set up and offers superb playability.

A Schatten Design contact piezo pickup has been installed, making it ready for stage use.
