dbx 163X Over Easy Compressor / Limiter 1990s - Black
Vintage DBX 163X OverEasy Compressor / Limiter - 110V US Spec Boxed w/ Manual & Rack Ears / half-rack panel. Cannot guarantee all fixtures are included.
Condition: Used / Vintage Functional with Minor Quirks (Sold As-Described)
Description: Up for sale is a classic dbx 163X half-rack compressor/limiter featuring the convenient front-panel High-Impedance (Hi-Z) instrument input.
Please note: This is a 110V US-market unit requiring a step-down transformer to run in the UK. It comes complete with its original box, manual, and rack-mounting hardware though the mounting kit may be incomplete as I have never tried to mount it. It is sold without a power transformer.
Performance: The unit powers on, lights up, passes audio cleanly, and the signature OverEasy compression is fully functional.
Minor Quirks to Note:
There is a low-level ground hum/buzz present when running through a step-down transformer (typical for ungrounded vintage US gear setups in the UK).
When using the front Hi-Z input with the slider pushed all the way to the far left (minimum position), an instrument can produce a faint, choked or warbled sound. This disappears the moment you pull the slider up to the right to engage active compression, and could be to do with the following:
The Front Hi-Z Input Trim / Impedance Load: The 163X has a small internal trim control specifically for the front Hi-Z instrument input. When passive instruments are plugged straight into the front jack with the compression slider completely zeroed out, any slight variance in component tolerance, aging capacitors, or minor DC offset on the slider track can cause the detection circuit to "hunt" for a threshold, resulting in that brief warble.
The Step-Down Ground Factor: Running vintage 110V gear on a UK step-down can sometimes introduce slight supply fluctuations or grounding ground-loops that alter how sensitive the input buffer behaves at its lowest thresholds.
A brilliant, highly sought-after studio compressor complete with original paperwork and packaging—ideal for a studio tech, collector, or user familiar with vintage 110V workflows.
