Lexicon PCM80 Pitch FX Algorithm Card
Lexicon Pitch FX Algorithm and Presets card for PCM80, fully functional with no problems.
Note - there is very nearly no difference at all between the V1.0 and V1.1 versions of the card.
The only difference is a setting in two of the patches (X0.0 FixYerVox and X0.1 FixYerVoxChm) that you need to change in V1.0 for it to work correctly. It is easy and simple. This is documented, including the exact button pushes you make, so that those two presets will work the same as in a V1.1 card. That document “PCM80 Pitch FX Preset ERRATA” is available from Lexicon online (I can also email it).
That is the only difference, they are otherwise identical, same algorithms, same presets in the same order. This also means that the V1.1 Preset List document and User guide (the card has its own operation manual) applies exactly the same to a V1.0 card. I recommend reading the manual to get an idea of just how much went into this card. The manual and 2-page preset list pdfs are avail from Lexicon, I’m also happy to email them.
Something extremely cool in the Pitch card (I used to demo this when I worked at Lex back in the day) is the sub-mixer - way more powerful than that sounds (see pix from the PFX Card manual). You can run the reverb and FX in parallel or into series with either one feeding the other and - bearing in mind how Lex was the first with extensive MIDI control of parameters with the 70 (Dynamic MIDI they called it) - you can automate this if you like, so that, say, a reverb feeding into the pitch and delay FX modulates to be in parallel and then into reverse series. It’s seriously powerful for effect and sound design creation, one of the things that sound designers like Scott Martin Gershin liked and got lots of mileage out of.
The following is from a Sound on Sound review:
The PCM80 has no conventional pitch-shifting capability, but the Pitch card changes all that, providing access to five very advanced pitch manipulation algorithms. What's most impressive is the amount of shift that can be used before the side effects of the process become significant. This is a must-have card for anyone into anything vaguely ambient. It's also great for everyday vocal thickening and fixing. If you have a PCM 80, you just have to have it.
So, this card essentially turns a PCM80 into a PCM81. If you have an 81, you do not need this card. I use an 81 in the video to demo the card working fine only because that’s what I have, I don’t have an 80.
A PCM81 is a PCM80, just with the Pitch FX card built in. That is why a PCM81 has 6 program banks (P0 - P5), while a PCM80 has 4 (P0 - P3). When you load a Pitch FX card into an 80, it then has 6 banks (P0 - P3 + X0 and X1), exactly like an 81. The only other thing an 81 has that an 80 doesn’t is AES digital I/O.
