The new limited-edition Dark Fire from Gibson combines the classic Les Paul form with brand-new function. Here, tone meets innovation, in this incredible marriage of Chameleon Tone Technology (we’re still waiting for full information on this) and second-generation Robot Guitar design. The Dark Fire features a red nitro-finish chambered mahogany body with black binding (making the guitar lighter than any other Gibson); a mahogany neck; a teflon nut; redesigned knobs; and a hot new pickup combination, with one Burstbucker 3 humbucker in the bridge position for classic PAF sound and one P-90h black soapbar in the neck position, delivering vintage sound with high output and a sweet treble response. There’s also a piezo pickup system (with one pickup per string, located in the bridge) that comes with an active preamp for enhancing the acoustic sound. The wiring of these pickups harnesses allows 20 different tonal combinations. The pickup switch has a pot built into it that allows you to blend the piezo variably. And, here’s good news for current Robot owners: all the new features of the Gibson Dark Fire will be available for your guitars, with a low-cost upgrade kit.
