Continuing to thin my collection of stringed instruments (the lap steel category is next), this is a vintage six string Oahu Diana Deluxe electric lap steel guitar from the 1940's. It is in very good condition, excellent for its age.
Key Specifications
- Body & Neck: Laminated or solid mahogany body and neck with a sunburst lacquer finish. [1, 2]
- Design/Decoration: Shaded mahogany top featuring gold leaf/scrollwork stenciling and tortoise celluloid binding. The headstock uses the distinctive peaked design seen on deluxe Kay-made jumbo acoustics.
- Scale Length: 25 3/4 inches (longer than many conventional lap steels, offering an extended range).
- Dimensions: 35 inches in overall length, 10 inches wide at the lower bout, and 1 1/2 inches deep at the rim.
- Nut Width: 2 inches (51 mm).
- Pickup & Electronics: Features a strong horseshoe-style single-coil pickup (often with a wooden handrest) paired with volume and tone controls mounted on either side.
Original Retail Price: Retailed around $60.00 in 1940, putting it in the same competitive price bracket as Gibson and Rickenbacker instruments of the era.
I heard years ago that this lapseel was highly sought after for the pickups and they were often cannibalized to use in other electric guitars.
Comes with original case.
