This is the Wren and Cuff Garbage Face, the signature fuzz pedal made with J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. It recreates his main 1970s EHX Ram's Head Big Muff, which he has used since 1987.

Autographed by J! That's right, a J Mascis signature pedal with an actual J Mascis signature that works perfectly. I was planning on being buried with this, and I suppose if no one ever buys this that's still an option.

This is essentially three pedals in one:

  • Clone of J Mascis' favorite Ram's Head muff that he's been using on stage for decades
  • Volume control like J uses to switch between between rhythm and leads
  • Clone of the Home Brew Germania treble booster (no longer in production)

Do not use a buffer before the pedalr (per side sticker on side, see photo), presumably due to the treble booster. The muff tone gets brighter when you turn it left, which is the opposite of newer muffs AFAIK.

Comes with picks and a beautiful booklet in good condition. See photos. Also note that the protective foam sleeve has wear and cracks that can be fixed with tape. I also added in some replacement rubber feet in case the current ones I added fall off.

What reviewers say:

Premier Guitar: Perceptible sense of space and headroom in the output. Individual notes get more room to bloom, so solos sound more lyrical and chords more articulate than on Sovtek-style Muffs. High build quality with easy-to-master controls. [Source: premierguitar.com, "Melt Faces with a Muff-y Machine Made for Mascis"]

  • Guitars Rebellion: Colossal drive with heavy low mids, plenty of top-end harmonics, and an imposing density. They call it the quintessence of the early-'70s Big Muff sound. [Source: guitarsrebellion.com]
  • Guitar.com: Highlighted the germanium treble boost running before the fuzz, which lets you hit the front end harder, plus the second volume knob for solos. [Source: guitar.com, "Wren and Cuff J Mascis Garbage Face"]

I get the closest Mascis tones using tips from watching several interviews with J in Youtube clips. I use a JM with volume at about 3 and the tone around 6/7. You can put a non-buffered OD before it with the volume pretty low (around 9 o clock) and the gain at about 11 to reduce volume of the muff. Like an OCD, Wampler TCD, or Hustle Drive. Plug it into the clean channel of a marshall-sounding amp and jam away.

The video shows recommended Mascis settings about halfway through. It also shows some Wren and Cuff background history behind this pedal.
